You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from each of the three credit bureaus every year. Make sure you aren’t lured by a Web site that looks free, but isn’t – see the alert from the Federal Trade Commission. A smart way to keep an eye on your credit report is to space out your requests, so you’re checking every four months. Put the tasks on your calendar so they happen annually and you don’t forget.
While you’re at it, get a copy of your Social Security statement annually and make sure your contributions all have been credited.
