I recommend using technology whenever it will make your life easier. A few years ago I started using tax software to file my income taxes. In addition, I file electronically, so I don’t have to go to the post office.
The IRS created freefile so that all taxpayers can file returns electronically for free, even if they haven’t bought tax software or used a tax preparer.
If your Adjusted Gross Income is $57,000 or less, you’re also eligible to use the IRS software for free.
One of the benefits of filing electronically is that your refund gets to you faster, if you have one coming to you. Whether you owe money or anticipate a refund, using e-file is fast, easy and free.
Procrastinators benefit from using e-file in combination with direct deposit or direct debit. I don’t recommend putting it off, but knowing you have the option can alleviate some of the pain of waiting until the last minute.
