self publishing going mainstream?

Jon Clinch published two books, Finn and Kings of the Earth, the traditional way.  Although both received praise from critics, neither became a bestseller.

Last year he published What Came After on createspace, under the pseudonym Sam Winston, and sold nearly 10,000 copies.  He credits social media for drawing attention to the book.

He returned to createspace for his next book, The Thief of Auschwitz, a literary novel carrying his name as author. Clinch was persuaded by the flexibility self publishing offers.

The book is due out in January; you can read about him and his books here.

Will more authors give up on conventional publishing to join the self-publishing movement? What do you think?
