I spend a lot of time talking to clients about collecting and their possessions. Keeping stuff because you think it’s a “collection” or because it might be valuable some day are not good enough reasons to allow it to stick around.
Last week I viewed a great video from Marc Sotkin, of Boomer Alley,
http://www.boomeralley.com/2009/04/14/collection-or-clutter. I recommend it if you are trying to figure out whether your stuff is worth keeping or not. It is very entertaining, yet Marc makes good points about collections vs. junk.
A few days later I read an article in the Washington Post magazine about a couple who have an enormous collection of Washington Redskins football memorabilia. While it could end up as a lot of clutter, the collectors have catalogued everything and have displayed their treasures in a “museum” format. Read the article and see photos here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2009/07/28/DI2009072801971.html
The difference between a pile of stuff and a collection is the way you care for it. If you truly have a collection that you value, treat it with the admiration it deserves.
